Are Tooth Extractions Necessary – Extracting Teeth To Save Smiles

Examining Dental Patient and Explaining Are Tooth Extractions Necessary

If you live near Joliet, Illinois, you owe it to yourself to see what we can do to help boost the health and appearance of your smile. We have invested in all the tools, training, and technology necessary to take you where you need to go! Today we want to talk about extractions. This is not a popular topic and it is a treatment that is often misunderstood, which is why we are making it the focus of this post. One common question we get asked by patients, are tooth extractions necessary? You see, in some situations, extractions are actually the best thing you can do for your smile.

Wisdom Teeth

In your late teens to early twenties, there is a significant possibility that your wisdom teeth will pop through. They may well grow crooked, not erupt, or be completely impacted. When wisdom tooth problems start to arise, it’s in your best interest to extract the tooth/teeth. While many dentists will refer wisdom tooth removal out to other surgeons, we do it all right here. In fact, your wisdom teeth can be removed in just one appointment!

Advanced Cavities

Untreated cavities can turn into a bad situation for you. You can trust that we will do everything in our power to save your natural teeth. But sometimes a tooth is too damaged to be restored through a filling, root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment. When this happens, removing a tooth is the best option in order to save the rest of your smile.

Gum Disease

When gum disease attacks your gums and underlying bone, some teeth may become too loose to be saved by conservative gum disease therapies. This is why it is always better to catch gum disease symptoms sooner rather than later!

Dentures

Complete dentures span the entire arch, so tooth extraction may be necessary if you are getting all of your teeth replaced. It will make your replacement teeth fit better and feel more natural in your mouth.

Orthodontics

Braces need room to be able to move your teeth into proper alignment. As such, tooth extraction may be the best starting point if your mouth is overcrowded. Makes sense, right?

A Painless Procedure

Tooth extractions that are performed in our office start with an exam of your teeth. Making sure you haven’t suffered any other damage due to a severely infected or decayed tooth.

Once we’re sure that your oral health is in order, we’ll anesthetize the area of the tooth in question. Once you’re comfortable, we’ll begin the procedure.

Don’t worry, we have several different sedation options available to help you feel more at ease while we are working in your mouth.

Once your tooth has been extracted, you’ll develop a blood clot that protects the tooth socket and allows for it to heal. In some cases, we’ll need to use stitches to close the opening, but this is generally reserved for surgical wisdom tooth extraction.

The thing to keep in mind is that you will be in good hands with us, and we will make it as painless and pleasant as possible for you!
