Calcium is a mineral that is important for healthy teeth, bones and muscles. It’s especially critical for the development of children’s teeth. You can help set your kid up for a lifetime of strong teeth by ensuring their diet is full of calcium-rich foods.

Your child’s teeth began forming in the womb. Calcium intake during childhood is essential well into adolescence to support the mineralization process by which teeth grow stronger. It also supports muscle and blood vessel health.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, only one in five children gets the recommended level of calcium every day. Dairy and certain vegetables are the best sources of calcium for your child to get the nutrients they need.

  • Dairy – Milk is the obvious choice for dairy. It’s a good choice to replace sugary drinks at mealtime that also contains vitamin D, phosphorus and magnesium. Other healthy lunchbox ideas for kids that contain calcium include yogurt and cheese.
  • Vegetables – Leafy greens such as kale, collard greens and broccoli, as well as peas, contain calcium, among others, all contain calcium.
  • Other foods – Some types of orange juice and cereals are fortified with calcium. Certain types of fish contain calcium, including salmon and sardines.
  • Supplements – Vitamins are also an option to make sure that your child has an adequate calcium intake, especially if he or she is a picky eater. Make sure the supplement also contains vitamin D to help their bodies absorb the calcium better. Consult your pediatrician for more information about supplements.

Calcium Guide

How much calcium does your child need? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:

  • 1-3 years old – 700 mg per day.
  • 4-8 years old – 1,000 mg per day.
  • 9-18 years old – 1,300 mg per day.

Calcium contributes to the healthy growth and maintenance of your kid’s dental care. Taking proactive steps to make sure they get the recommended amount of calcium every day is just as important as brushing and flossing.
