Diagnosing Your Headaches

People who are having headaches and if it is dental related, it almost always has to do with the bite. So there are a couple of things we look at. We are going to check their bite, it’s called an occlusion, how do the upper and lower teeth come together. If they aren’t hitting evenly, sometimes the bite adjustment is warranted. We do have a computerized system called T-Scan that we can put in to check the relative levels of force on each tooth and sometimes we get that out and people bite down on a little monitor and it tells us right on the computer, this is the percentage of force on this tooth versus that tooth because sometimes it is hard to tell. Most of the time, however, it is somebody who is clenching or grinding their teeth at night and they are unaware of it. If you are doing it during the day, well yeah I’m driving and I’m grinding my teeth. When you do it at night, you’re not sure. So typically we will recommend something called a bruxism appliance which is basically a night guard; it’s like the retainer, it is worn to relieve some of the stresses that otherwise would be absorbed through the teeth.

At your first appointment, we’ll start with an initial examination to rule out any possible cause of your headaches. If we can’t find any infection or decay that could be referring pain, then we’ll proceed to test your bite and examine your teeth for evidence of wear caused by teeth grinding.

While bruxism and TMD often go hand in hand, it is possible to have one of them without the other. If you are experiencing symptoms of bruxism, you may be waking up with a headache, waking up your partner due to loud teeth grinding at night, noticing that your teeth are flattened or chipped, or have pain originating in your temples.

If you’re suffering from TMD, you may have pain in your jaw or cheeks, trouble chewing, hearing a popping sound when you chew, or find chewing is uncomfortable. For both TMD and bruxism, we can offer you solutions that can eliminate symptoms and help you sleep better!

Mouthguards and Appliances

For people suffering from TMD, we can offer a small appliance that you wear at night. Worn on the front few teeth, it will help your jaw stay in a natural, comfortable position. You’ll wake up feeling rested and without pain, all because of a small, custom-made appliance!

Bruxism is treated in a similar way but with a different piece of equipment. We will make you a cushioned mouthguard that not only prevents nighttime bruxism, it also cushions your mouth to absorb the force of the motions. Your jaw will be kept in a comfortable position that will help you wake up feeling rested and ready to face the day pain free!
