1. Up Your Intake of Water

Lower humidity levels and furnace-heated air can lead to a dry mouth, especially overnight while your mouth can gape open when you’re sleeping. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for the bacteria that causes cavities because you don’t have enough saliva to wash away the buildup. Increasing the amount of water you drink throughout the day can help maintain an ideal moisture level in your mouth. 

2. Limit Sugar Intake

With holiday parties, Valentine’s treats and more time in front of the TV, it’s easy to reach for sugary snacks and drinks. Try to be mindful about how much sugar you are ingesting to keep tooth decay at bay. If you want to indulge, make sure to drink water as well to help wash the sugar away you’re your teeth.

3. Protect Your Teeth During Outdoor Activities

One of the best parts of winter is the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities such as sledding, ice skating and skiing. Unfortunately, this kind of physical activity puts your teeth at risk for a dental emergency if you chip or break a tooth. 4. Be Kind To Your Gums

5. Replace Your Toothbrush

As a best practice, dentists recommend that you replace your toothbrush or toothbrush had at least every six months. Make sure to do this during the winter months when you’re more likely to catch a cold or other bug.

6. Maintain Daily Dental Care

Continue to brush your teeth 2x per day for 2 to 3 minutes each time, followed by flossing and mouthwash. It’s also important to schedule one of your bi-annual visits with your dentist for a cleaning and evaluation.
