At Shorewood Family Dental Care, we pride ourselves on maintaining the natural integrity of your teeth whenever possible. In some instances, however, a tooth has to be extracted. When that happens we’re here for you! We’ll also gladly follow through and plan any other treatments necessary to restore your smile after the tooth extraction!
Teeth can be extracted for a variety of reasons. However, the most common for us at Shorewood Family Dental Care is due to excess decay and gum disease. Our number one goal is to always try to save each and every tooth that we can. Unfortunately though, there are instances in which the progression of the decay is past the point of being able to save the tooth. In these instances, extraction becomes necessary to prevent further damage to your mouth.
When allowing gum disease to progress to its extremes, teeth can become loose and damaging. Even worse, if left alone it can become very difficult to save. Despite the fact that your teeth may be healthy, the loss of gums and damage to bone means that they won’t be able to remain in our mouth.
Wisdom teeth usually arrive in our late teens to early twenties. As they arrive, there is a significant possibility that they will grow crooked, not erupt, or be completely impacted. When any of these occur, it’s necessary to extract your wisdom teeth.
At Shorewood Family Dental Care, we refer wisdom teeth extractions out to our partnered oral surgeon.
Tooth extraction done in our office first involves an exam of your teeth to make sure you haven’t suffered any other damage due to a severely infected or decayed tooth. Once we’re sure that you’re healthy, we’ll anesthetize the area of your bad tooth. Once you’re comfortable, we’ll begin the extraction.
If you are anxious about getting a tooth extracted, don’t worry! We have several different sedation options to help you make it through this frightening procedure.
Once your tooth is extracted, you’ll develop a blood clot that protects the tooth socket and allows for it to heal. In some instances, we’ll use stitches to close the opening, but this is generally reserved for surgical wisdom tooth extraction.
Depending on the position of the tooth to be extracted, you may want to consider one of our several restorative options to help bring your smile back. We recommend dental implants, especially if the rest of your mouth is healthy! An implant will act just like the natural root of your tooth. This allows your jaw to maintain bone density and stay healthy for years to come.
