If you’re feeling nervous or uneasy about an upcoming dental checkup or procedure, we’re here to bring you some peace of mind with our sedation dentistry. At Shorewood Family Dental Care, we understand that sometimes you just need a little help to relax when you’re in an unfamiliar surrounding. No matter how many times you have visited our office, it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious or uneasy when undergoing a dental procedure.
That’s exactly why we’re thrilled to be able to offer dental sedation to our patients. At our Shorewood, IL dental office we offer three types of dental sedation ranging from mild to heavy. Read on to learn more about each of the options we offer, then call Shorewood Family Dental Care at (815) 725-5991 to find out how we can use dental sedation to keep you comfortable during your time at our office.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, the mildest form of dental sedation we offer at our Shorewood, IL dental office. This form of sedation is great to manage dental anxiety and need to have a quick procedure done.
With nitrous oxide, you’re still awake and able to respond, but you will feel a lot more relaxed. You may also feel a bit drowsy.
We give you nitrous oxide through a nose piece that you will wear throughout the entire procedure. That way you’re continuously breathing in the laughing gas and don’t have to worry about it wearing off.
When the procedure is over, we will remove the nose piece and the effects of the nitrous oxide will quickly start to wear off.
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective way to make you feel more relaxed and at ease while we take care of your teeth.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation is more intense than nitrous oxide. This form of dental sedation is given in pill form. If you’re a good candidate for oral sedation, we’ll write you a prescription for a sedative that you will take about an hour before your procedure.
By the time you arrive at our Shorewood, IL dental office, you’ll feel totally relaxed! You will still be conscious, but you’ll feel groggy and slightly out of it. Because of the amnesiac quality of the sedative, you might not even remember the procedure.
>The effects of oral sedation last for several hours, which means you won’t be able to drive yourself home. If you are prescribed oral sedation, you’ll need someone with you at your appointment to drive you home.
IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation is the highest level of sedation dentistry we offer at Shorewood Family Dental Care. To be able to offer IV sedation dentistry, an office needs special certification. We’re proud to be one of the few offices in the area that can offer you IV sedation!
Dr. Robert Funk was IV certified in 2004, so you can rest assured you’re in good hands at our Shorewood, IL dental office.
IV sedation is a particularly good option for patients with severe dental anxiety or for patients who are undergoing complex procedures like oral surgery. You’ll still be conscious and able to respond when we talk to you, but you’ll totally relaxed and likely won’t remember a single thing.
Because of the strong effects of IV sedation, you’ll need to have someone in the office with you to give you a ride home once the procedure is over.
The effects of IV sedation typically last for several hours, so you may want to plan to take it easy for the rest of the day.
