Lasers are cool; ask any kid what a laser is, and that’s probably fairly close to the answer you’ll get. In fact, as a kid-friendly children’s dentistry, we’ve heard it many times. At Shorewood Family Dental Care, we have been providing families with dental care near Joliet for the last four decades. Lasers are a big part of our practice: we use them to diagnose oral health problems, and to treat them!
Why are Lasers Useful in Dentistry?
There are many benefits of laser dental treatment. For one, a laser will replace a drill in many procedures; nobody like the drill, and just thinking about it can even be terrifying if you have dental anxiety (a condition affecting 60% of Americans; we can use sedation dentistry to help you overcome it! ).
- Lasers have been shown to cause less pain in some cases; this means we don’t need to use local anesthesia (and the big needle it comes in).
- Lasers reduce bleeding and swelling when used to treat soft tissues, such as your gums.
- Lasers offer incredible precision. When used during the performance of a cavity treatment, we can preserve more of your healthy tooth that is left.
What Lasers are Used at Shorewood Family Dental Care?
We have high tech dental lasers in every one of our examination rooms, which maximizes our ability to provide this technology to patients; we’re laser crazy here!
In our practice, we use a diode laser and a laser-based diagnostic tool called the DIAGNOdent.
Diode Laser: A Friend to Your Dentist, and Best Friend to the Patient!
Dental laser treatment with the diode can be used for a number of procedures. It can safely remove soft tissues (such as your gums; diode lasers are particularly useful for treating gum disease along with root planing and scaling). This is accomplished with less pain, bleeding, and swelling than other methods (scalpel!). Diode lasers also remove the bacteria that live in the pockets on your gums caused by advanced gum disease.
Patients love lasers because they’re less intimidating and they’re silent (unlike a drill, you won’t hear any of those awful, disturbing sounds you might recall from the last time you had a major dental procedure).
DIAGOdent – Finds Cavities Fast Before They Get Out of Hand!
Before DIAGOdent hit the scene, do you know how dentists diagnosed cavities? Traditionally, the dentist would use a pick (that hook-looking thing) and literally “poke” the surface of your teeth. If the sharp end of the hook got caught, that meant it had poked its way successfully into a cavity that could then be treated.
Cavities start out as tiny openings in your enamel. Compared to these microscopic divots, a dental pick’s hook might as well be a semi-truck!
The DIAGOdent laser uses a gentle laser pulse on the surface of your teeth. Subtle differences in the time it takes for the light to bounce back from the surface of your teeth will indicate a change in the surface. This allows us to catch cavities much earlier in their formation, which in turn allows us to treat cavities without the need to fill them!
Lasers Sound Too Scary?
Lasers make dentistry more comfortable and accurate. However, some people wouldn’t get into a dental chair if we told them they’d get a million dollars!
Just being afraid of the dentist shouldn’t prevent you from getting the care you need. Take back your oral health with sedation dentistry! Sedation dentistry allows even the most skittish patient to take advantage of all the cutting edge tech we use in our practice to provide caring, comfortable treatments for a range of oral health problems.
We offer three types of sedation dentistry:
- Inhalation Sedation – Nitrous Oxide or “Laughing Gas”
- Oral Sedation at the Dentist – A sedative pill (taken an hour before your appointment
- IV Sedation – Intravenous delivery of a sedative to induce a profound sense of relaxation in patients with extreme dental anxiety or dental phobia. It is also useful for patients requiring many procedures in one appointment.
Depending on your needs, we can help you get the dental care you need when you need it, instead of waiting for a small problem to become a major one. Preventive dentistry works: why avoid a cleaning if it means you don’t need a root canal?
