Enjoy the Holidays & Keep Your Healthy Smile

December 1, 2018by Robert S. Funk, DDS

Greetings from your general dentist in Shorewood, IL! As many singers have sung, this is the most wonderful time of the year!

Many people seem happier and friendlier during the holidays. People are generous with their time and their talents, and they try to express that in many ways.

That includes making and sharing all kinds of delicious treats. It’s not realistic for most of us to completely avoid those snacks between get-togethers with family, friends, and co-workers. So, as your general dentist in Shorewood, we want to give you a few tips on how to enjoy those holiday cookies, cakes, and more.

Part of that is remembering to get routine dental cleanings and exams at Shorewood Family Dental Care. Call 815-725-5991 now to schedule your next checkup with us.

In the meantime, enjoy the holidays!

Enjoy Your Food

During the holiday season, it’s OK to enjoy the delicious foods that people make during this time of year. Just try not to overdo it.

Too many Christmas cookies can raise your risk of tooth decay and cavities. You can minimize that risk by eating sweets after a meal. At those times, your mouth is already producing saliva, which can rinse away sugary food particles. Drinking water while eating sweet treats can help as well.

Dig In, but Clean Up Afterwards

You will likely get together with many family and friends for meals during the coming month. Whether you’re dining on ham or turkey, enjoy macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes and gravy, and who knows what else, you need to remember to keep up your daily hygiene routine.

Brushing and flossing are both necessary to remove food debris, bacteria, and plaque from your mouth. Flossing is essential since many foods eaten at this time of year have a way of getting stuck between teeth.

Be Aware of What You Are Drinking

Many adults will enjoy a cocktail, wine, or other adult beverage during holiday gatherings. If you do, please don’t drive, but also be aware of the effects alcohol can have on your oral health.

Many alcoholic drinks contain sugars, so they too can increase your risk of decay and cavities. Alcohol can cause dehydration and dry mouth, which are good conditions for the bacteria that cause gum disease. Many adult beverages can contribute to stains on your teeth as well.

If you do have a drink or two, remember to do so responsibly, for your sake and the sake of your smile!

Remember the Basics

The basics of good oral health should be followed all year, but they are particularly important when you know you may be eating more treats than usual.

Remember to brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and for two minutes each time. Remember to floss once per day to remove food particles and plaque from the spaces between your teeth and below your gumline.
