Traveling this Summer? Don’t Forget to Take Care of Your Teeth!

How many times have you had a little extra dessert or spent more than usual during a summer getaway? It is easy to justify the out-of-the-ordinary if you just say, “It’s okay; I’m on vacation.” Neglecting dental care while traveling is never a good idea. Unfortunately, when we change up our routines for some fun in the sun, good oral hygiene can suffer as well.

The combination of a few extra sweet treats, late nights and jumbled schedules means your teeth may not get the attention they deserve. A bit of preparation in advance of your vacation will keep your dental care while traveling on track.

Be Prepared

For proper teeth care while traveling, double check what you packed. Make sure that you include your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash. If you plan to carry-on your luggage on the airplane, purchase travel size versions of your favorite products, so you don’t have issues getting through security. If your trip is by car, pack an extra toothbrush and paste for each family member and stash them in the glove compartment for easy access at rest stops.

Attack Bacteria After Meals

Pick-up some American Dental Association (ADA)-approved sugarless gum for your trip. Chewing gum during a flight can relieve ear pressure. It can also help reduce your chances of plaque build-up between meals by triggering extra saliva that can help wash away cavity-causing bacteria.

Avoid Problems

Try to fit in one of your bi-annual dentist visits shortly before leaving on vacation. Your dentist will conduct a thorough exam and identify any issues that need to be taken care of promptly, so there are no surprises when you’re away from home. Make sure you have your dentist’s contact info stored in your mobile phone just in case of a dental emergency.

Dental Care While Traveling: Maintain Your Routine

Plaque and bacteria do not take vacations. Be sure to brush, floss and rinse at least twice a day, just as you do when you’re at home. Monitor family members to make sure they are keeping up with good habits, too.

Vacations are a great time to unwind, relax and recharge. Go ahead and enjoy yourself, but don’t let your teeth suffer. A bit of advance preparation and adherence to good dental care while traveling is all it takes to keep your smile happy and healthy for the next vacation.
