For more than five years, Shorewood Family Dental Care has been proud to participate in “Operation Gratitude.” Every Halloween, our patients generously donate between 175 to 250 pounds of candy. This year was just as successful.
We have a few reasons to collect candy every year. In addition to preventing kids’ cavities by limiting their intake of sugar, we happy to share part of the bounty with the Operation Gratitude organization that in turn ships care packages full of sweet treats to deployed troops around the globe.
Since 2003, Operation Gratitude has sent more then 2.3 million care packages to soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. It’s a great way to say “thank you” for their service.
Even better than the candy is the wonderful letters kids write to the soldiers that is sent with the care packages.
Local Distribution
We also shared the love locally. The remaining collected candy was distributed to various organizations throughout Shorewood, Joliet and the surrounding towns. A few places that we distribute the candy includes homeless shelters and public libraries.
Collection Guidelines
We collected leftover candy from October 31 through November 6, during office hours at Shorewood Family Dental Care (a general dentist near Joliet). We also asked people to consider adding a few homemade cards for the soldiers who receive the candy in the Operation Gratitude care packages.
