5 Ways To Improve Gum Health

improve gum health

You use a toothbrush loaded with toothpaste twice a day. So, when you think about dental care, it’s likely you focus on the health of your teeth. Yet, gum well-being is an equally important part of your overall oral health routine. Luckily, there are simple steps you can take to improve gum health.

Gums are the support structure for your teeth, affecting how you eat, speak, and even breathe. The soft tissue also plays a role in keeping your whole body healthy. If gums are inflamed, bacteria from your mouth can find its way into your bloodstream, leaving your body more vulnerable to infections or other issues.

Gum disease — called gingivitis — can progress to periodontitis if left untreated. This is a much more severe condition that may require gum disease treatments. Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen as gums recede and the jawbone weakens. Traditionally, dental surgery was required to address problems caused by more advanced periodontitis, including flap surgery and bone and tissue grafts.

Check out these five tips for ways to improve your gum health.

Improved Brushing Techniques

For a healthy mouth and smile, the ADA recommends you:
Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush.
Brush continuously for two minutes every time you brush. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Selecting the Right Tools

In addition to the following tips for brushing your teeth, pay attention to what toothpaste, toothbrush and mouthwash you use. Your brush’s size and shape should fit your mouth, allowing you to reach all areas easily. Electric toothbrushes, such as the Sonicare, can be more effective at removing plaque from the surface of teeth and the gum line than manual toothbrushes. The best toothpaste brands have ADA-approval and contain fluoride. Some brands even have options that taut they are better for healthy gums. Select a mouthwash that contains anti-plaque, antibacterial, antimicrobial or anti-gingivitis ingredients to address gum health.

Floss Like A Boss

Flossing helps remove plaque that can cause cavities or gum disease from the interdental – spaces between teeth – where a toothbrush can’t reach. Focus on improving your flossing habits and vow to do it every day.

Tap Into Technology

There are a number of apps available to enhance your tooth and gum care that help you brush for two minutes (BrushDJ), assess dental issues (MyDentist), remember to floss (Text2Floss) and even virtually try on braces, veneers or whiter teeth (Virtual Dentist).

Get Regular Dental Check-Ups

Remember to visit your dentist for check-ups and cleaning two times per year. Preventative care is an important part of staving off issues and treating cavities and other concerns before becoming more significant issues.
